Blattos and the French group

"Omg le boner." Blattos played Asheron's Call from French internet cafes: first the X L net cafe, owned by Sabrewolf X, then one called Gamecore, "the *famous* cafe, where Le Boner came from." His first character, Achtepa, wasn't even his: somebody at the cafe rolled it for him on their account, and he gave it back when he had to. Achtepa levelled on the beach at Mayoi, then in the Direlands to 42, sworn under Black Rose Noble in Kara with the antis, and raided Fort Tethana every day. Achtepa was famous enough that GEN recruited him, and since he knew Sabrewolf X, GEN's first monarch, in real life, it was a short step. He raided on a borrowed Mouse-the-feared until its owner wanted it back, then took over a level 53 character named Blattos, after his old StarCraft nick, and by September 2001 was GEN's monarch, telling the DNN he sometimes wanted to delete Blattos and reroll Achtepa's template. Snappy's movie had already turned "le boner" into Darktide pop culture. Blattos turns up on Blood's roster in February 2002 and in Rak's exposé as a GEN core running the speed hack and the client hack at once; years later a Reckful commenter still rated him among the best PKs before Anti P, cheats aside. The French presence ran deep: Rak of KoC was French, and the XL crew (Moon XL, Krylin X L, Tigrou X L) had lived in Kara under Black Rose before going full PK.
