  Magic Items 101
by Hakeem (2/28/00)

Most wands, staves, orbs and sceptres cast some sort of mastery spell on the person who wields it. It is generally a creature spell like Life Magic Mastery Self I - VI or Item Enchantment Mastery Self I - VI. The higher the level of casting, the higher the Arcane Lore requirement to use it, but the bigger the boost to the skill in question.
There are 4 types of skills. Specialized, Trained, Usable and Non-Usable. I think we all know what specialized and trained are, so I won't go into that. The difference between Usable and Non-Usable is this. Usable is useable, but does not gain XP by usage like trained and specialised do. But they all have a value of greater than 0. Non-useable skills have a value of 0, and cannot be used unless their value is over 0. To raise this above 0, you can either Train it. Or have someone or someTHING cast a mastery spell on you.
So if someone casts Life Magic Mastery Other I on you, your life magic skill is now 10. For III I believe it's 20, and IV is 25 (I'm pretty sure.) Same goes for these wands, orbs, staves and sceptres. When you wield it (if your AL is high enough) it will cast the mastery spell on you. You can then cast level 1 spells (part of the time, you'll still fizzle some of the time) You still have the same requirements. (Have to learn the spell, and have the components in your inventory.)
I do not believe that you will be able to cast level II spells, but you should be able to learn most level I's if you're so inclined.
Anyone who can wield this item, and receive the beneficial mastery spell from it, can cast spells of that school. You will need to learn the spell but then you can add it to your spell bar.
