  Warriors with Wands
by Khali (2/28/00)

There was some dialog on the list about Warrior's (that is non-Life Magic chars) casting L1 Life Magic spells by using Life Magic Mastery wands. Yes indeed this does work. Here's why.
Life Magic is normally an "Unusable" skill, that is even though your Focus+Self/4 is >0, you have a skill of zero for the purpose of determining success or failure. That is you cannot cast Life Magic spells. However, with a wand of Life Magic Mastery in your hands, you all of the sudden have a Life Magic of between 10-30 which is plenty to cast a L1 spell without fizzling. You must have the components on hand and use the wand (or get the Life Magic Mastery creature buff from a friendly mage) to learn the spell you wish, but after that you can cast Life Magic spells when the wand is equipped and in spell-casting mode and the spell icon is selected on your spell bar.
In particular, the useful spells are Heal Self I, Stamina to Mana Self I, and (probably the best trick of all) Stamina to Health I. The formulas for these L1 spells are easy to come by and can be found on the spoiler sites if you really need to know (see Links). Note that Warriors could even learn Heal Other I just in case they are caught in a situation needing to heal someone who is on-screen but moving (running for their lives?).
Note that this is a much better trick with Life magic than with any other magic because the difference between the L1 spell and the L6 spell is mostly one of efficiency. In many cases the L1 spell is not only as effective but often preferable (even for true mages!) because of the quick cast and low burn risk. For example Stamina to Health I takes half of your stamina and gives 75% of that to you in health. If you have 25/100 health and 200/200 stamina this will leave you at 100/100 health and 100/200 stamina which is exactly what you want.
Using a Heal kit in battle with a low health is risky: the animation to put your weapon away coupled with the higher failure rate when you are below 50% health. Switching your weapon for a Life Wand and doing a quick Stamina to Health Self I is not only faster but can fill your health in one shot and carries no additional risk when you are close to death.
