| I'm not pulling any punches here. This is my analysis of Darktide
vs. Harvestgain. Obviously I'm a huge DT advocate so take this with
a grain of salt if you need to. |
| Harvestgain - Pros |
| I'm not pulling any punches here. This is my analysis of Darktide
vs. Harvestgain. Obviously I'm a huge DT advocate so take this with
a grain of salt if you need to. |
|
1. Peace And Serenity
You can go afk on Harvestgain without having to fear anything.
You can stand around in town, talking to your friends, and you never
have to worry. You can shop for components without having to keep
nervously checking your radar. Some people might not consider this
a big deal...but trust me, once you're on DT you realize how much
you took the ability to shop in peace for granted.
|
|
2. Metal Armor Is Actually
Useful
On HG, there are very few monsters who attack with lightning, cold,
fire. You can wear you matching Amuli suit, your uber-rare Koujia
collection, your coolest looking Celdon, without fear of repercussions
from lightning wielding raiders. On DT, such things are only useful
as death items, which really decreases the amount of pleasure you
get from pulling some cool armor off of a Noble. Sister C's all-blue
suit would have been broken up and sold by now on DT.
|
|
3. Established Characters/Peaceful
Levelling Grounds
Who wants to start over? And even if you do start over, who wants
to be at the mercy of merciless grief players? If you play on HG,
you can level your character in relative safety. Places like the
Lair Of Death, Virindi Fort, Disaster Maze, Olthoi Vault, they are
accessible to all. You don't have to worry about territorial players
who will kill you because they want the LoD noble room to themselves.
|
| Harvestgain - Cons |
|
1. Too Much Easy Loot
Level 2's with Matty Robes. Lv 12's with matching Amuli Suits.
LV 18's with 112 Yumis. You think they earned it? No way. I'm LV
33 on DT and I still wear my Matty Coat and Reed Legs. I can't keep
any item above 3k value for long.
|
|
2. Q'alabar (and this is
just one example)
Give me a break. You go to Q'alabar, the place is one huge portal
storm, with people spamming that they are trading this and that.
When did Asheron's Call turn into a swap meet?
|
|
3. Politics Mean Little
Don't like a certain monarch? Too bad, you can't do squat about
it. You can trade some insults, or you can go PK *when it's convenient*
and kill him, IF he's also red.
|
|
4. PK System is a Joke-
You Can't Kill Idiots Unless They Are Dumb Enough To Go Red
It's bull. Druss once lamented that there are no consequences for
actions even on DT. I disagree with that, I think he was unwittingly
describing the PK switch on HG and the other servers. You can go
red, kill a few people, and then you hit the alter and go white
again and laugh at them.
|
|
5. Too Crowded/Camped
The ONLY place you can hunt in the Obsidian Plains. That'sit. Incunabula
Vault? Camped. Disaster Maze? Camped. BDC? Camped. LoD? Camped.
Lower Levels of the Crater? Draindraindrain... this tied in to #2.
People who have no business being in the Crater will go down there
and drain Magmas, because there are no repercussions from the people
who can actually kill them without hding behind a wall. You show
up at the BDC on DT, you get drilled because Red Devil owns it.
You're probably saying: "We'll, that's not necessarily an improvement."
I think it is...it's their reward for levelling their characters
and gaining power, and if they are powerful enough to stop everyone
else from coming in, good for them.
|
|
6. Even being LV 70 gets
you no respect from idiots.
LV 15's can talk shit to you all they want. On DT, if you're LV
55...NOBODY talks shit to you. Ever. Or they die.
|
| Darktide - Pros |
|
1. You Can Kill Idiots
The number one reason to be on DT. You can kill punks. I don't
really need to go into detail here, do I?
|
|
2. Friends/Enemies...Important
The bond between friends/allies is so much stronger on DT because
you are responsible for helping your companions defend themselves.
Every friend on DT is one less person who will try to kill you.
By the same token, every enemy you make is one more assassin in
the shadows. On HG, they might spam you. On DT, they will kill you.
This is why I say that there are DEFINITELY much more meaningful
consequences to your actions on DT.
|
|
3. No LV 2's in Amuli.
I'm offended by LV 2's with Amuli and I'm glad that Darktide actually
requires you to have the strength to earn your armor. I traded a
Cracked Shard to Hog-The-feared for a FULL YOROI BLUE Suit, AL about
150 on all pieces, and guess what? I lost it the next day because
the whole deal was worth about 20,000gp. On DT, no-drop is king.
|
|
4. Less Crowded
I often go into Mayoi at 10:00 pm and there are about 2 people
there. Q'alabar is sometimes completely empty. Teth has, at most,
10 people at it. I have seen the LoD empty at times. What a feeling
it is to have the LoD all to yourself (not that I can do anything
in such a situation). :)
|
|
5. Bring Enough Guys And You Can Camp The Noble
And Kick Everyone Else Out
The title sells this one.
|
|
6. Rewards For Your Power
Man, I can't believe the number of people who kiss my silent butt.
If I see a LV 14 PK'ing newbies in Yanshi...I can show up and he'll
say sorry or run like a ho'. You level up and you'll see the difference
right away because of the way people's attitudes change. It's a
great feeling to stand in town, knowing people COULD attack you,
but they won't because you'd whip all of their asses. You'll love
it the first time you show up and some PK goes "shit, *your name
here*" :)
|
|
7. Politics Are Great
One of Darktide's most fascinating things is it's political situation.
If you hit the message board on CoD for Darktide, you'll see more
than the usual "So-and-so is a thief" and "trading for crystal shards".
You'll see messages from established monarchs about their guilds,
commentary on recent events and raids, political posturing, propaganda,
and negotiations between guilds. It's great stuff, and one of my
favorite things about DT.
|
| Darktide - Cons |
|
1. Many Assholes
Man there a lot of complete losers on this server. Grief players
who just want to make your life miserable, and talk shit while they
do it. And they're not just low level, either. There are LV 50's
who are asses as well. More than any other factor, this is why people
don't play on Darktide.
|
|
2. No Peace
They will kill you while you're shopping, while you're afk, while
you're lagged, while you're lying down, while you're fighting two
Olthoi at once, while you're hunting, while you're standing in town
talking. Then they'll loot you, then you'll get a message that they
owned you. I'm not exaggerating here. It is not even remotely fair.
You have to learn to adapt, to learn danger zones and steer clear
of them. And even that doesn't really work. Until you can defend
yourself...you're gonna be frustrated.
|
|
3. Cool Metal Armors Are Useless
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing them. Actually, wait. I WOULD
be caught, THEN I'd be dead. No elemental defense means you take
it in the tailpipe.
|
|
4. Anything Over 3k in value you'll have trouble
keeping until you're level 40.
If you somehow get a Pyreal 112% Yumi +7 to attack, prepare to
lose it. In a hurry.
|
|
5. Some Levelling Grounds Are Off-Limits
BDC for example is dominate by high-level Red Devils who will
kill you on sight. This is a side effect of the political situation
that makes the server great, and could be considered a pro or a
con depending on your views.
|
| -------------------- |
| That's it. Remember that Darktide is the logical evolution of the
Asheron's Call playing experience. Harvestgain was like training wheels
for me, and Darktide is like the real thing. |
| I'm not going to lie to you...the DT Source needs more people. With
Suya'n gone we only have about 4 full-timers, and I'm the only one
above LV 30. I guess maybe I'm hoping that once you see what effects
the June patch have on character creation, you HG guys might finally
want to make the jump over here. |
| Even if NO ONE comes though, I'm not giving up. I'll be the DT
Source by myself if I have to. |
