  Peacekeepers Rush to Help Innocents!
4/30/00 - My name is Zang. General Zang. I'm a Peacekeeper. Protecting innocents from murderous thugs is what I do.

I got the call sometime in the afternoon. Reportedly, someone named Axeman was terrorizing locals at Stonehold. I'd heard of this Axeman, he ran with a criminal gang known as the FSS, and the Peacekeepers had had trouble with this group before.

I decided to handle this call alone. It was foolish, I know. The manual states that you never try to apprehend an armed suspect without backup, but it looked like a routine thug-busting assignment.

I arrived in the town about twenty minutes later, but saw no sign of the suspect. I interviewed several of the locals, but no one had any information. The town was quiet, and people were going about their business in peace. I chatted with the citizens a while.

Suddenly, someone rushed me and began throwing blow after blow. The onlooking citizens were shocked into immobility, except for the lone vassal of Ronan in town who had the presence of mind to throw several heals my way. It was to no avail, and I made a journey to the lifestone.

I sent out the call. Peacekeeper down, needs assistance. The attacker was Druez Traceless, male Sho, early 40s, armed with a nekode. He had a rap sheet as long as your arm. Killing innocents in Tufa, raiding Anti-PKs in Glendonwood, but this time he was going up against the Peacekeepers.

A half hour later, our Anti-PK strike team was assembled. Four Peacekeepers, and one vassal of Towel on an Anti-PK work exchange. We arrived at Stonehold, and the fight began. The suspect Druez attempted to resist arrest, and his accomplice Dark Force, a life mage, tried to aid and abet him in his crimes.

In the ensuing scuffle, Druez Traceless was sent to the lifestone twice by Peacekeepers Deborah and Sai-Ban, but Dark Force managed to escape into the hills. We tried to calm the frightened townspeople, and restore order as best we could. At least Druez's band of PKs had been chased off for now, and decent people were safe once again.

New Darktide Website
4/28/00 - Sam's Bar & Gryyll is now open for bussiness. It's owned and operated by Peacekeeper Samtgryyl, and they always have classics like "Drudge Shack" playing on the jukebox. Go check it out, it'll keep you away from those evil MP3s.

Turbine Working on New Game Engine
4/26/00 - The new pictures of the Lugian and Olthoi are great, but the Olthoi movie is absolutely amazing. (It will take a few moments to load).

Bin Akbar Returns
4/25/00 - GZR's Guest Columnist of Evil, Bin Akbar, has once again sent in an update. However, it's full of evil lies and you probably shouldn't even read it.

Around the World in 60 Days?
4/24/00 - Imagine a world where there is no PvP switch, no carebears. Imagine a world where you can recruit natives, build armies, construct cities.

Imagine a world where nothing ever "spawns"..new creatures (even players) being asexually reproduced from older creatures. Imagine a world where you're NEVER out of the world....if you have enemies, you'd better have native bodyguards for when you're offline, because your character never leaves the world.

Now imagine a world that is that is 682,000 square miles (AC is 576 square miles), or 1,184 times the size of Asheron's Call. No shards, just one gigantic world that everyone plays in, and the characters never leave.

It's called Atriarch. Go check it out.

WAR WITH FSS!
Demon Possesion and Spying Incident
4/22/00 - I looked at the old sage as he read the tea leaves a third time, and burnt a small stick of incense.

"How can you be so sure old man? He doesn't even look sick at all.", I asked.

The sage shook his head sadly. "It's not a sickness of the body, or even the mind, it's a sickness of the soul.", he replied, "Within a week, he will have been possessed by a demon, and he will no longer be the man you know. You had best prepare your people General."

The news hit me like an arrow to the chest. So, the Leader was to be possessed by Demons. His soul lost. This was hardly a fitting end for one whose cloak of courage fit him far better than his chosen name. Without the Leader, this sham of a treaty with the evil Druez would collapse, and blood would again run in the streets. Just when unity was most needed.

"Thank you Sage, I will warn the Peacekeepers."

I left the house of the Sage, and headed towards the Phyntos where the Peacekeeper guild meting was soon to start. As I crossed the commons, working my way through the crowd of 20 or 30 townspeople, I saw not a Peacekeeper among them. Good, that meant that they were already gathered for our meeting.

"Got ne money 4 armor?", asked a beggar. I ignored him and walked on.

"Hey General!", another person in the crowd said, " What's this fight or leave nonsense? You call yourself an Anti? This is not right!"

"It's the Law.", I said, "Defend or leave." I walked on more rapidly, ignoring the rest of his arguments. I was running late for the meeting. No time to throw another draft dodger through the Heartland Portal.

I entered the Phyntos, and made my way to the meeting room. About a third of the Peacekeepers were gathered, not enough to fill the small room. We've never been strong in numbers, just strong in our Anti-PK convictions. As the meeting started, I received a frantic mindspeak from Archidamus. There was a lone PK in town, preying on innocents and mules.

We portaled from the Phyntos…..directly into an ambush. The hated Azile, Crum, Ronald Mcdonald, and their band of other murderous scum awaited us. We were imperiled and vulned as we appeared, and a brutally one sided fight ensued. The battle looped through Phyntos Valley, into town, and back out into the valley. We regrouped at the lifestone, and charged back into the fray, and regrouped at the lifestone again.

Then an angry thought hit me. "Where the hell are all the people?", I asked the assembled Peacekeepers, "There were over 30 people crowding the town five minutes ago, now there's nobody but us and 10 PKs 20 levels over us?"

"They ran, like always.", A Peacekeeper answered,"They think Defend or Leave means run into the woods if there's trouble. They have us to defend them, why should they fight when we do it for them?"

Angry mutters of agreement came from the group. Then the murdering PK gang attacked again and we were fighting for our lives. The battle looped through the deserted town. Two or Three locals joined us in fighting the forces of evil. But it wasn't enough. I sent the order out to retreat and regroup at Edelbar Castle.

As we gathered at the Castle twenty minutes later, our scouts in town reported that the Azilite/Macdonald scum had left the area, and that close to 40 townies had crept back out of the woods and now inhabited the town square.

"Damn them", said Frost Gunner,"If even half of the bastards actually helped defend their own town, then PKs would never dare attack Stonehold."

More Peacekeepers arrived, and the grumbling increased. A common thread ran through the discontent: Why were we fighting to defend people who wouldn't defend themselves? Why pay with our blood for other people's freedom to spam and beg and *YMCA* in the town square?

We started to reconvene our disrupted guild meeting, when a scout spotted a stranger on the wall. It was Dark Force, one of the jackbooted FSS who were supposedly our allies under the Leader's treaty. He was standing on the wall, quietly spying on our meeting.

"Excuse us Dark Force", Frost Gunner told him, "this is a private meeting."

"Bad place for a meeting, this is a public place.", Dark Force responded,"and I'm hunting here."

"What are you hunting inside this building?", I replied, "there's nothing here but us. Go away."

"I don't have to", Dark Force announced happily, sitting down on the wall and settling in,"You can't attack me either, or you'll be KOS."

"You won't be warned again," I said. He laughed. I waited and then gave the orders for him to be vulned and imperiled by Peacekeepers. Two nekode hits and he was dead.

Druez and his jackbooted thugs arrived twenty minutes later, determined to revenge the execution of their spy, and were promptly sent to the lifestone a few times for their trouble. It felt good to slaughter the Pking scum that we'd been forced to live among as they masqueraded as Anti-PKs.

We'd held our tempers and swords in check at their PK insolence for far too long, out of respect for the Leader of Stonehold. But soon, he would be possessed by a demon from beyond Dereth, and most likely join the Blood Monarchy as so many demons did.

(to be continued)

GZR Exclusive! Gamers-Network Closes Forums Under Threat of $10,000 Fine!
4/21/00 - The Professionals, The Circle of the Eternal Dragon (CeD), and the Holy Avengers are all good guilds on Darktide, and they all had message forums hosted by Gamers-Network. Until tonight at midnight that is. Here's the message they saw this evening on their guild forums...

Today the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act becomes effective in the United States. After much consideration, the owners of this site have concluded that the risk of accidental violation of the law ($10,000 fine) far outweigh the benefits of maintaining this site. Sometime laters this evening, this site will close. We apologize for this inconvenience and and we apologize for the short notice. We had hoped to continue this free service. It has become increasingly clear, however, that we cannot do so without undertaking an unacceptable risk. As of now, no new registrations are being accepted and other steps are being taken to comply with the provisions of the new law. By midnight tonight the site will be closed and all personal information of former users will be purged.

Somehow, this new law doesn't seem like a good thing for freedom of expression and public discourse. Could this mean no more Kiki on the internet? Is Vig Neo doomed? GZR will continue to keep you posted as this story evolves.

A Sordid Tale: The Kiki Controversy
4/20/00 - There's really not much that can add to the whole Kiki story. I found hours of enjoyment reading the resulting messages, and odd links. It wasn't too shocking to see the the evil and hated Azile plagiarize Lum, but I was shocked by the unexpected final twist to the story.
