A Compendium of tips for the New Mage
by Dhali (7/10/00)
These are all going to come off the top of my head, so it's probably
going to jump around quite a bit.

1. The higher the level of the spell you're casting, the more XP you
will get for it. If you can cast Life and War III spells, do so, as
it will earn you more XP towards IV. But if you're fizzling 50% or
more, you're probably better off, not waiting until it's a bit higher.

2. Use Mastery spells. These will allow you to cast higher level
spells, with less fizzles.

3. Trick #1. If timed properly, you can get a free shot in on a
creature before he charges you. Here's how. Stand as far away from
the creature you are about to attack, try to put him right on the
edge of your radar. Fire your most powerful war spell. As soon as
your persona steps back from casting, fire your most powerful vuln.
If both are successful, and you don't fizzle, the vuln should hit
first, followed by the war spell. Here's why this works. A creature
will not know he's attacked by a war spell until he is actually hit
by it. However, a vuln spell will be noticed right away. So you
have until the time the bolt leaves your wand until it hits him to
try and sneak the vuln in there after it.

4. When fighting Lugians, learn their timing. There's an article
somewhere on the board I wrote a while ago on this. I'll try to find
the link later.

5. Find out what a creature's typical attack is and protect yourself
from it. Dires Drudges typically use Piercing. I cast Armor V,
Piercing Prot V, Impen V, and sometimes Piercing Bane to protect
myself from their attacks. Lugians typically use Bludgeoning, but
sometimes will come at you with an Axe so Bludgeoning first, followed
by slashing.

6. Keep Stamina to Health on your spellbar. I had almost forgotten
about this spell, but it's an amazing stream of life when you need
it. If you have 100 stamina, and cast this spell, you will get about
40 health back very quickly.

7. Keep drain stamina on your spellbar. Combines very well with
#6. I use this combo usually once or twice while tanking up to three
Drudge Ravenors.

8. There are some components you can run low on. But you should
always carry extra Onyx, Hawthorn, Cobalt, Birch, Cedar. These will
allo you to cast war spells and armor spells. Staples of the four
school mage. Hyssop and Agate are also good ones to stock up on.

9. Know your hot-keys. When you're in War mode, the numbers on your
keyboard activate the corresponding spells on your spellbar. If you
need to quaff a health draught, press the control key, then the
corresponding number. Remember that 'Insert' will move you to a
previous spellbar. 'Page Up' will move you to the next spellbar.

10. Always do your component shopping from oustide of the building.
Target the shopkeeper from outside. Press R to approach him. You
can do this in Yanshi, Tethana, and the Desert Mage. Most likely
from other places as well.

11. Stay in War mode when you're buying comps. And have Lifestone
recall on a spellbar. If someone vulns you, press the number key
that corresponds to LS Recall, and get out.

12. If you LS recall, and someone starts attacking you immediately,
DO NOT LS Recall again. (I've done this at least twice). It will
just take you back to the same spot... :)

13. Learn to Slide Cast. Practice when you're casting buffs on
yourself.

Here's my main spellbar...

1 - Fire Vuln IV
2 - Flame Bolt IV
3 - Flame Bolt II
4 - Flame Streak III
5 - Drain Health I
6 - Drain Stamina I
7 - Lifestone Recall
8 - Stamina to Health
9 - Stamina to Mana

I have one of those funky Microsoft keyboard with keys split up a
bit. The round keyboards. 1-6 are on one side. 7-0 are on the
other. I keep LS Recall on 7, because it's at a corner of keys on my
keyboard and easy to find.

I keep the lower level Flame Bolt as a finisher to something that's
low on Health.

This spellbar is geared more toward melee and creature combat.
(particularly drudges)

I haven't done so yet, but I'm going to make another spellbar geared
more toward missle/mage combat, with little to no war spells on it,
and more drains/debuffs.

Here's my typical buff sequence...

Creature Mastery III
Mana Conversion IV
War Mastery IV
Life Mastery IV
Armor V
Impen IV

That's it. Quick, and easy. Gives me a decent amount of buffs for
just a few spells. I'm much more vulnerable to mage attacks, but I
can usually get away if need be. Then I can finish buffing, come
back, and try again.

If Melee attacks, I will generall try to cast the appropriate
Protection spell then do some drains, followed by a vuln, another
drain or two, and a war.

I'm by no means an expert on PvP combat, but I'm learning, and look
forward to Fight Night to do some more testing...
