| Healing Kit Free Refils (11/8/00) |
|
Select the healer NPC, then turn away from it. Press the use key,
then right afterwards pick up the kit in your inv. AFTER the npc
has talked to you, drop the kit in a different inv slot. It will
be new. This works in hebian, mayoi, baishi, but not AB. The devs
know about
this bug, but have said they aren't going to fix it.
I haven't tried it myself. Let me know if this works. It could
reduce the number of healing kits I carry. :)

Hi,
The best thing to do with a low level mage is to fight stuff out
in the
open. Use your life vuln and respective war spell. Try casting the
highest
level war spell you can manage then immediately hitting the vuln
after the
animation stops. By doing this you will often get the vuln to stick
before
the war spell lands and do considerably more damage on your first
strike. If
you get resisted on one you can then scoot if you need too. One
of your
first goals should be to get big enough to shoot lugians.
If you are going to level by draining there are still other tactics.

Ok, I've been meaning to mention this little item or two.
EMERGENCY LOG-OUTS
There are two known "immediate log-out" shortcuts in
AC, though a lot
of people don't know about them.
The use of Shift-Esc will log out your character immediately, going
through the animation but without the prompt screen (by the way,
did
you know you can just hit Y in response to a prompt screen? You
don't need to mouse click the "yes").
This is abuseable however, as you can do this while running
using "god-mode" style jumping. Your character will merrily
bounce
along all the while doing the logout animation.
Yes, it works. Try it, you'll like it.
The other is more abrupt. If you hit Alt-F4 AC will terminate.
Immediately. You'll find yourself back at your desktop and AC will
no longer be running. Your character will exit the game, but I don't
know if it goes through the logout animation (I suspect it does,
but
you're long gone, from your side of the game). I use this shortcut
when I want to switch accounts and log in another character quickly,
such as summoning a portal on one account and getting a character
through it from another.
Someone might want to test this shortcut with someone watching
them
to see what the effects are.
I don't recommend frequent use of this technique without rebooting
as
exiting programs with abnormal terminations as this MUST be tend
to
leave large chunks of memory unstable in your computer. So if you
do
this, try to reboot afterwards.
I'd be interested to hear people's experiences with the use of
these
techniques on Darktide.

| Extreme Melee Templates w/ 10
Endurance (9/9/00) |
|
A hint, for how to level up a low-endurance character with no outside
twinking: Get a bow/crossbow, and shoot the critters to kill them
or soften them up. Even with no training, your skill will be 50,
which is good enough for low-level drudges, mossies, shreth, etc.
Once you have your Health to a survivable level, put away the bow.

| Death Items (9/3/00) |
|
Carrying more loot is a good thing, it won't lead to more drops.
It's been said that you lose more to Pk, but I believe that is simply
perception.
I've dropped just as many items to Lugs as PKs.
How many you drop is based on your level plus a random number 0,
1 or 2.
The value of each item is randomised to prevent you from ever being
certain what you'll drop. For the purposes of drop calculations,
values are randomised with in a +/- 10% range.
If an item of a similar class is involved, it's value is then halved.
This is to hopefully prevent you from losing ALL of your weapons
or ALL of your armour for example.
Oberion has been theorising that No-Drops are figured into these
calculations regarding value and order of drops even though they
won't actually be dropped themselves.
I have noticed that occasionally the drop formula has seemingly
targeted a particular order of items types regardless of value.
By this I mean that instead of dropping my most valuable "whatever"
I sometimes drop my most valuable magical item or plain item even
though I had a FAR more expensive weapon. The 10% randomised value
wouldn't be enough to cover the discrenacy.
At the end of it all, I believe that you should just carry as many
light, valuable items of varying types as you can. The drop concept
is understood, but it seems to deliberately have a random element
so that you can't completely prepare for death.

| Slide Casting (8/31/00) |
|
Slide Casting:
I haven't perfected it yet either but here's what I know:
You hit a strafe key just after casting your lvl IV+ spell (lower
level spells are too fast to make a difference) and that "breaks"
the animation lock to a certain extent.
You can move around a little while casting, and people who are
good at it can jump, run forward or backward a little, all while
casting the spell.

|
| Ravenous Weapon (8/31/00) |
|
You need a 275 skill to activate the magic on the ravenous dagger
but be aware people are summarily UNimpressed with either the Atlan
or Ravenous dagger. You need a 250 skill and 180 lore to activate
the magic on the Atlan.
There is no skill check for the Ravenous dagger but to get a peerless
Atlan you should have a base skill close to 200 so you can be buffed
to 250 with level V/VI buffs.

| How to save chat logs (8/6/00) |
|
To save a chat log.
Open word or any word processor.
open AC.
go into town and look for PK's.
Kill some.
Click your mouse at the end of the line where you want to stop saving.
Hold the mouse down. You should see all the text highlight in a
different color.
Move your mouse up the chat log until the very begining of where
you want to start saving.
Press CTRL, hold it down, Press C.
All the text you want saved has to be still highlighted when you
do this.
Now you can release all your buttons (mouse and otherwise.)
press alt, hold it down, press Tab.
This brings you back to the desktop, or brings you right into your
word processor.
click in your word processor.
press CTRL then press V.
Voila, all your text will be appear there if you have done this
right.
Do this in a safe spot. Or exit out of Ac entirely.
If you exit out of ac entirly and you have done it wrong, all your
text is lost.
If you can find a safe place to stand for a few seconds, you can
alt tab out (ac will still be running) press CTRL V and see your
text appear and know that you have done it right. If you alt tab
out and nothing appears when you press ctrl V then you can go back
in and try to save it again.

And she is right outside of Yanshi
15.1, 50.3
I just bought Ten Healing Potions, Twelve Stamina Potions, and 6
Mana Potions.
And the cheapest prices I have ever seen on the stuff.
Excellent kits, mana potions and healin potions are 500p. They are
700 in Mayoi, and more everywhere else I have seen them.
I was going to run to mayoi for healing potions, then remembered
about her being out by the Mossie Tower. A short search later and
I found her. And no one attacked me while I shopped. I love that.

| Selecting targets from off screen
(7/28/00) |
|
A note on targeting...
I've noticed some people mentioning trying to run offscreen to
ruin their opponents target lock, and as Jamie mentioned target
lot lasts a LOT longer than radar range but can still be broken
if you run far enough.
Unfortunately, people like me CHEAT.
When I have a target locked and lose lock for whatever reason,
once I'm close enough again, I hit... P.
P = Select Previous Target
Yes, the game will highlight the previous target for you again.
It REMEMBERS, as Spock once said (or will say?).
If I had Jamie targeted and lost lock, assuming I wasn't stupid
and started clicking randomly, I'd sit there hitting P until the
crosshairs stayed locked on him. Even outside targeting distance
you'll frequently see the crosshairs flash on screen giving you
an idea of distance and direction.
Word to the wise... Might come in handy in town some day... ;)

Side note. If you want to make taper shopping that extra tiny bit
faster. Click on the item you wish to buy, press T(this is the split

me, with all the comps I have had to buy on HG.

| Magic for meleers (7/24/00) |
|
For the 20-somethings...
This may seem obvious, and you may already have heard this a hundred
times.
If you are a melee/archer, who uses Item to buff your weapons, are
you using a wand that buffs your Item skill?
The advantage of using a wand: buffing your Item skill by 15 or
20 points means less fizzling, and may also allow you to cast higher
level spells, if your base skill is close but not quite there.
A similar argument would apply of course, if you are using Creature
magic to buff yourself or others.
Also, a quick primer on the Junior Life Mage Kit... also known as
a Life Wand.
If you carry a life wand, you can learn some basic Level I Life
spells, such as stamina-to-mana, heal other, infuse mana, infuse
stamina, etc. These spells come in handy in a number of situations.
If you don't have Life trained, using a wand will only give you
15 or 20 points of skill, but that's enough to cast level I spells
(albeit with a lot of fizzling).
Farik most often uses stamina-to-mana and stamina-to-health, but
has several other spells learned in case of need.
Just FYI. Use this information if you will.

| Little trick with LS and Portal
Recall (7/22/00) |
|
I don't know if any of you know this little trick, I haven't seen
it posted on any of the Source boards or msg.
There is a little trick, (I don't know if you'd call it a bug or
not?) with LS and Portal recall. I read about it first on the Crossroads
of Dereth boards and it actually happened to me.
While fighting in the Lugian Citadel, I hit a big pocket of lag.
Basicly I was being smashed by monsters I couldn't see. So I ran
into the big octagon rooms before the room where all the Lithos
spawn. Pulled out my wand and at about 10 health cast LS Recall.
Then I hear a loud Ugghhh and I see the Lithos has killed me. When
I get to the Life Stone, guess what's at me feet. My body. Yup,
if you can cast LS or Portal recall before that final blow, your
dead body gets ported to either the Life Stone or the end of the
Portal your tied to.
Just a little hint, could come in handy if you're gonna have a
problem with body recovery or if you don't want a pk to loot you.

| Recharging Tip (7/21/00) |
|
Maybe this is a well known trick but I just discovered that you
can drain the health of the oak drudge in Ayan Baqur. So if you
do health to mana and then drain health on the Oak Drudge you can
regain quite a bit of mana. It has 1000 health. Unfortunately you
cannot drain its stamina. :)

| Mages should time their buffs
(7/20/00) |
|
Use a timer buff so you know when your spells are about to expire.
When levelling in the Dires, I would always cast Life Mastery III
then Armor IV. Armor IV lasts longer than Life Mastery III, so when
my level III spell wore off, I knew my Level IV spells were soon
to
follow.
This can be useful even if you only have Item buffs. Cast BD IV,
HSIV, SKIV and DFIV, but also cast BDIII on your weapon. When the
BDIII wears off, you know you only have a few moments left of level
IV buffs. When this happens, get to safety and rebuff.

| Directions to Desert Mage (7/18/00) |
|
From the Big Rock in Yanshi: Take the Yaraq portal behind the tailor
in Yanshi.
From Yaraq, head Southeast to 22.8S 0.7W. Go into the Al-Arqas
portal.
From Al-Arqas, you'll be in a valley. Turn and go SW until you
can
climb up the hill to the South. Run South - Southwest to 40.8S -
11.8E. Cheapest prices on all comps, and all scarabs excluding
diamond are available here. Tapers sell for 28p each, I believe.
Same prices as Mayoi mage tower, but less dangerous, IMO. You can
also get mana stones here as well. And the Gharun'dim master robes
are available here as well.
Also, shop from outside the building. Run around the the back,
target the archmage, and hit R to use. If you're in the right spot.
you can shop from outside the building and see if enemies approach.
You can also shop from atop the building by running up the sloped
side.
One last thing I recently started doing. I go into combat mode
before shopping. #7 is my lifestone recall key. If things get
dangerous, I can be in shopping mode, and still recall just by
hitting the '7' key on my keyboard...

| Slide-casting and Slide-healing
|
|
I've learned that in a PvP fight vs. Mage or an Archer, that learning
to Slide-cast or Slide-heal is crucial. I was able to make Chinook
miss a few shots, and still be able to cast a spell by using this
interesting technique.
Both techniques use the same basic process, and are simple once
you learn how to do it.
Slide-Cast
Go into war mode, and press a key for a spell. Now press the X
and C key at the same time while the spell animation is going off.
You should start to slide back and to the right. Or try X and Z.
Back and to the left. You can also experiment by adding the D and
A key.
Slide-healing
I've found this works best and is easier to do if you have the
following keys set up. I place my healing kits in 7 and 8 hot keys,
and me in slot 9. You can place yourself in a hot key, by dragging
your backpack to a slot. The will allow you to target yourself.
To heal, you simply press 8, then 9. To Slide-heal, press 8, then
9. As the healing animation starts, quickly press X and C. You should
start healing, while sliding back and to the right.
