OK so I've played both Jackaroo and Elske to level 33.
For Jackaroo I played her every second of the way, no macroing.
For Elske, I macroed her to level 18 and then played her after that.
Here's the comparison.
First let's start with the starting templates.

It is pretty clear as to which one is the superior mage. It is
interesting that Elske has a slightly higher skill in War and Item.
I think this is because since it is cheaper overall to raise Life
and Creature when they are specialized, then it frees up points
to spend elsewhere. Also notice that I haven't spent a single point
on Magic Defense with Elske. Since Magic Def is seemingly useless
against the big critters, I chose not to waste any points on it
initially. I can take on bigger stuff at this level with Elske than
with Jackaroo. Doing Tuskers with Jackaroo is dicey but Elske can
manage level VI spells much better at the same level. Also, I've
been able to fight Umbris successfully with Elske since Life and
Creature buff to 260. Life and Creature are essentially Elske's
2 biggest offensive weapons with War used to finish stuff off.
Some conclusions I have formed.
- Arcane lore is overrated for a mage. You can accomplish the
same results and better with spells and save lots of cash w/o
it.
- Armor and high health are key for a mage. I started Elske with
40 strength and maybe a little more would have been better. My
goal is to get Shadow Armor for her.
- Magic Yield is perhaps the single most important spell. It brings
a critter with an uber magic defense down to your level. So Creature
becomes just as important as any of the other schools.
- Drain health I is the second most important spell. The ability
to do damage and heal yourself at the same time is a huge advantage.
