This is a collection of e-mail communications on the old
AC List (listbot) which was accidentally activated and spurred former
Sourcers Garurumon and Mutt to once again make a play for conversion to
Everquest, the MMORPG for which they left AC. What followed was a flurry
of e-mails detailing some of the more interesting aspects of EQ which
I felt deserved to be preserved for all posterity. For many of us, Gar
and Mutt will always be Source, no matter what game they're playing.

Hello all, Ok no story about me, but check this out. Verant held
a Best of the
Best Warrior Tournement. The Tourney was held on each server and
then the
winner from each server was copied and brought to the EQ test server
where
they all battled it out. Here is a 43MB mpg from the event, if you
have the
time and the bandwidth I suggest checking it out. http://eq.castersrealm.com/editorials/warriortoc.asp
Thanx,

Mutt (9/13/00)
Jamie if there was ever a game for you and your Axe its this game
man: Picture yourself as one of those warriors: This game is is
for Warriors. Just wait till you watch that.
=============================================
Dont you dream of swinging two axes at a time and Kicking and Bashing
with your Shoulder and just doing massive DMG and as your health
bar drops below 35%, you go Berserk, as a Warrior should, and start
doing massive critical dmg fast? Every ounce of strength leaving
your body as you ignore all pain to you and become frenzied to the
point that nothin could survive your axes and power....
But at the same rate you rely on another person in your group Solely
there to heal you and to put protection spells on you, where another
person is fighting side by side with you but has added fuctions
of Tracking and small magics ro augment the fighters, and where
yet another person in our group is casting Strength and Swing
Speed spells and also throwing offensive frost bolts at those said
monsters, and where yet one more character about 3 feet high is
casting magics nonstop giving the Mana users faster generations
of mana, and enchanting monsters if there is more then the party
can handle running crowd control and creating illusions to fool
the monsters and npcs?
and Last but not least our other Brother of evil creation part
warrior part dark magic user, is casting spells that make the blood
of the monsters boil and fester as he swings a mighty blade as we
do to strike down our foes with subtle magic and cold hard steel.
This game IS Jamie Wakefield. 7Foot Tall Barbarion Warrior of utter
power. The controller of the parties destiny, and controller of
the tides of battle where no ONE MAN can stand against groups of
evil, you are there in the front lines of battle with your brothers
of Magic and Steel banded together for the fight of you life...
WIth the trees swaying in the background and the screams from far
away of something
very familiar yet so distorted... Where months go by and you have
yet to see
35% of the lands and wonders of this world of Narrath. Where a Warrior
is wanted everywhere for deeds or glory and honor, where Mages love
thier
Warrior friends and need them always to survive, and where your
Brothers
band together again common quests to gain better fortune and famed
weapons forged of old... Where there is Dragons, and Wyverns and
Dwarves and Dark Elves and Hobbits, and Gnomes, and Humans, and
the WOod Elves,,, All from a different part of the world. THis is
the game you have been waiting for where you will finally see Druss
the Legend come out of the books and into your wildest dreams and
in his fullest potential.
Muttfyre of Kelethin, with Goddess Tunare as his savior.. Born in
the tree tops of
the beautiful city of Kelethin, home of the wood elves... Dual Sword
Dealer, Master of Tracking and of Bow. Lead Corporal of the Muttmarines.
The scars of battle on my face from 30 seasons as a Ranger in Norrath,
has not lulled by spirits as of yet, but rather raged the fires
of adventure in my blood. Take up the Axe and take it up now for
there has never been a better time. Join with your friends of old
to do battle against the evils and you will not be sorry. Druss
belongs here, He is needed, as a
warrior, as a friend, and as a Leader. The time has come.
That movie rocked.

Yes Brother Miko
Brother Miko would be best at the Human Monk. Trained in the art
of Enchanted Hand to Hand Combat with Round House Kicks and the
ability to make Monsters think you are dead (Feign Death) THe Monk
is the Most Powerful Damage Dealer in the game, Super Lightning
Fast and extremely good at one thing, Dealing massive Dmg and FAST.
Monks are great and are ALWAYS Saught after. The downfall is you
dont get to wear a lot of pretty colored armor and stuff, they are
almost armor less. Cured Silk and very very VERY light armor is
all you can wear. Your defensive skills are not as high as most
BUT you can allways DROP DEAD and stay that way
until the monster moves on or your comrades kill the monster. You
can use Staves and other Monk type weapons like the Baton. Extremely
important for Monks are best at "Pulling", Which means
getting a monsters attention, and if more monsters then yourgroups
can handle attack, you can Feign Death and wait till they leave
and try again.
Monsters are extremely smart in this game... Incredibly smart.
Brother Miko a superior Monk

I would say Druid or Shamen They both get Spirit of The Wolf (Makes
your movement 50+% faster) and you get it at level 14. Where a Ranger
GETS S.O.W. but at level 39. I dont even have it yet.
Druids and Shamens are great Druid is a little better for you if
you like to solo a little easier. :)

I truly believe that we will all be playing EQ someday.
Why?
After a year, I still am horribly addicted to this game, but less
and less so every day. There will come a day when I stop playing
AC.
But there will never come a day when I do not want to play a game
with the scope and interaction of AC.
That means a fantasy MMORPG.
So, I can play
AC
EQ
UA
UA BLOWS.
I will eventually get tired of AC.
That leaves EQ.
The other options are
UO2 - not out yet, and might not be for a while, have never been
a fan of any of the ultimas, nor UO 1.
Neverwinter Nights - not out yet, might not be out for another
year.
that other one mizu keeps raving about, but that won't be out for
YEARS. Possibly 3 years, possibly never.
That leaves EQ.

well in EQ all players run at the same speed, unless they use magic
to make them run faster. Druids, Shamans, and Bards all have magic
they can use on themselves and others to make them run faster. As
far as attacking speed(this is broke down by ability to dual wield,
double attack, and the typical delay/speed of the weapons the class
use), Rogues, Monks, Warriors, Rangers, Bards...in that order, but
then there are haste items and spells/songs to make you attack faster(bards,
enchanters, shamans have these spells). As far as dieing the fastest
any pure caster(mage, enchanter, necromancer, wizard) will normally
die the fastest because they have less armor class, hit points,
and defensive skills.

Honestly Jamie, don't look as EQ as the default left over one,
it really has lots to offer and is a good game. Also you are right
the next line of MMORPGs are a long way off: Neverwinter Nights:
soon, but it is more like Diablo then EQ/AC Shadowbane: Some time
next summer, also it doesn't look like it has first person view,
I personally like to play RPG from the first person view, not the
third person. Horizons(my personal favorite): not til late 2001
or 2002 Many more are in the works, but are all years off.

1) In AC everyone fights olthoi for cash, Umbris for loot to keep,
and Tuskers of Lugs for XP. In EQ, are there monsters that are much
better at giving XP and other monsters that are better at giving
loot?
2) I noticed in the finals video of the best warrior, that a lof
of the finalists were (i assume) trolls, or half giants. Some huge
humanoid. If I want to be the most badass fighter, should I make
a troll? (whatever those things were)
3) AC has two kinds of servers, DT and the others. What kinds of
server choices are there for EQ, and what is the Test server?
4) Anyone new playing AC, I would say - start on solclaim, no one
there has gertahs dagger, and no one there has hoary robes, and
its the least populated. Any such advice like that?
5) Anyone starting Ac needs to know a few things. Don't play the
preconstructed classes. Don't play a character withouit Item. Never
take missle defense, deception, cooking, mace, alchemy. Start with
100's in your primary attributes. What advice can you give us about
that.
And mutt, no gushing about how EQ is perfect. Give us some real
dirt here. Don't let me start a halfling enchanter only to find
out enchanters are bad, and halfling enchanters SUCK!!!

Mutt (9/14/00)
Every Class is needed in EQ. Balanced NO. Necro's can solo very
well. THey have huge Skeleton Pets that are as hardcore as a Warrior,
and Druids and Magicians are pretty good too THose 3 classes arent
always WANTED in groups as they are so good by themselves. But ENchanters
WOW you want a group you got one anytime you need one!
Loot drops are as such, COMMON, RARE, VERY RARE, when you get a
rare of VR your very happy. Its usually something someone wants.
I know Thad is writing something about all your questions Jamie
so Im going to write about another of my incredible experiences
the other night... The other night Devimon was broke, he bought
a Treeweave Tunic and had 0 left. Game over unless his buddy Mutt
could take all Devi's extra weapons and armor, and travel to EC.
East Commons* This is where Players have setup in this Tunnel to
sell their Wares they have been keeping that they dont use. (A Garage
sale if you will) Devimon gave me about 8-10 things totally about
400plat worth of money for me to try and sell. /auction WTS Silvery
Axe 200p* FOr example will produce a zone wide announcement that
you are selling a silvery axe for 200p. People will then send you
a TELL saying **/tell muttfyre I got 175pp for your axe take it
or leave it** And in this way you can either get PLAT or a TRADE
for your items. I brought home 800plat for Devimon for his 400plat
worth of items. Can you Say Guinny Bastard!? Yes and proud of it.
I also got a 2000plat item for myself for 1000plat, on top of that
the item I sold for 1000plat was worth about 600-750pp So yes a
business man I am :) Economy is incredible. It is amazing on this
game. You cant buy ANYTHING from Vendors but you can make out like
a BANDIT on the Auction zones and places if your smart!
Every little detail has been covered in this game. Its amazing.

Thad (9/14/00)
Hi J,
I won't be as pushy as Mutt...you know good cop bad cop :-)
1) In AC everyone fights olthoi for cash,
Umbris for loot to keep, and Tuskers of Lugs for XP. In EQ, are
there monsters that are much better at giving XP and other monsters
that are better at giving loot
[Thad Jakusz] This is a tuff question. Yes. Ok I guess I can explain.
Yes certain monsters in certain zones will give more exp, for instance
fighting inside dungeons give more exp because it is a lot tougher
then fighting outdoors. Loot is much different in EQ then in AC,
in AC any high level monster has a chance to drop similar cool loot,
not so in EQ. In EQ only certain monsters drop certain loot, like
only Varithyz, a named unique Sarnak, will drop Sleeves of the Ancients.
So in other words for certain items you have to go on a quest to
slay a certain beast. Some items, like Sarnak Earring of Station,
have a chance to drop of any Sarnak you kill. Also usually the tougher
the monster the more cash and better loot you get. Another note,
cash is RARE in EQ unlike AC where Gar could make 200k fairly easy,
which is good and bad. Also selling stuff to venders is useless,
they give you like 5%(maybe) what the item is worth, also some items
that players will pay 20,000pp for a vender will give you 10pp for,
and then turn around and sell it for 12,000pp or so.
2) I noticed in the finals video of the best
warrior, that a lof of the finalists were (i assume) trolls, or
half giants. Some huge humanoid. If I want to be the most badass
fighter, should I make a troll? (whatever those things were)
[Thad Jakusz] They were Trolls and Ogres, commonly referred to
as Fatties. Yes they make great warriors, but some other races like
Dwarves and Barbarians do very well also. In EQ stats don't mean
much at all, so really the race you pick is more for preference
then game affect. Of course the fatties are both evil, so you would
have to deal with being evil, which means lots of venders and NPCs
won't talk to you and some will even kill you. This site has awesome
info on character creation http://eq.castersrealm.com/. Also dwarves
can be paladins J :-) Oh! another note about fatties is they scratch
thier butts a lot, no really when you fatty character is standing
around idle they scratch thier butts, like once every 30 seconds
I bet.
3) AC has two kinds of servers, DT and the
others. What kinds of server choices are there for EQ, and what
is the Test server?
[Thad Jakusz] EQ has two kinds also PvP and the normal kinds.
Test server is the server where changes usually are made first so
as to test them out.
4) Anyone new playing AC, I would say - start
on solclaim, no one there has gertahs dagger, and no one there
has hoary robes, and its the least populated. Any such advice
like that?
[Thad Jakusz] Start on Cazic Thule cause that is where we are
:-) But if you don't have friends on a server already, then go to
then one with the least players listed, cause it will most often
be the newest one. I used to play on a Tunare and came to Cazic
Thule cause that is where Mutt and Jerod were, I must say I am much
happier playing on Cazic Thule. EQ is a game for grouping and it
is much easier to group when you know people already. Also there
are some items that no longer drop anymore, but most were not the
awesome items like gertahs dagger or a matty coat.
5) Anyone starting Ac needs to know a few
things. Don't play the preconstructed classes. Don't play a character
withouit Item. Never take missle defense, deception, cooking,
mace, alchemy. Start with 100's in your primary attributes. What
advice can you give us about that.
[Thad Jakusz] Oh lots here :-)
1. Stats don't matter much but there are some rules to follow. If
you play an Int caster(mage, necro, wizard, enchanter) put as much
of you bonus stats into Int. If you play a WIS caster(druid, cleric,
shaman) put as many bonus points as you can into WIS. If you play
a melee class make sure your dex and agi are both above 75. http://eq.castersrealm.com/
is a great site that has awesome creation guides for every class.
I highly recommend you read it and follow its suggestions for stats,
they are basically what I would suggest anyways.
2. Play what appeals to you and don't listen to what other people
rant about. All the classes are basically balanced, and to Verant
balanced does mean the same level of killing power, but balance
means a combination of killing power, versatility, and group usefulness.
Here is a great page that shows what many of the races look like
in armor/robes, in case looks matter to you: http://everquest.allakhazam.com/equipment/fashion/Fashion_Table.html
3. Remember EQ is hard, it just is. But I think it is the challenges
that make it fun.
4. Grouping or at least partnering is the key to success in EQ.
Chanda and I can kill and do way more stuff when we team up then
either of us can do solo. Yes there are classes that can solo better,
but still grouping is more fun I think.
5. Use the sense heading skill and keep it maxed and learn to use
the /loc system.
6. Get maps from websites, knowing where you are and how to get
someplace is important in EQ, cause there aren't portals and no
item magic either :-)
7. If you want to play with Mare make sure to pick race/class combos
that can meet up earlier on. It would be bad for J to play a Dwarf
Paladin and Mare to play a Troll Shaman, they start very very very
far apart and one is good and one is evil so they can't easily go
to the same places.
8. Get to Kunark as fast as you can cause that is where Chanda and
I are. Also the Exp on kunark is GREAT!!!!!
Ok I am tired of typing, check out the websites and ask me more
questions, I will answer them as best as I can.

Mutt (9/14/00)
Assasin's rule. Monk Assasin or Rogue? Rogues get Bows and are
almost as good as rangers with them. Rangers are awesome for dishing
DMG tho, but are wussies at
taking Dmg. But then again I can Snare a MOnster run away and heal
up and go after him again. Rogues look like fun.
One class I wouldnt be interested in playing is a Paladin. Its
not me. I had a necro its not me. Magicians and Wizards arent me.
Have thought of a Cleric and an Enchanter becuase those are the
2 most needed classes in the game for groups besides the tanks to
take the hits.

Jamie (9/14/00)
The more I read, the more I know I have to play something with
Item. Now that I have it on DT, I know I will have to have it in
EQ.
I'm actually looking at Druid mostly.
having to group appeals to me not at all. I want to be able to
jump on and play 30 mins before work. And yet, group when I want
to.
Druids seem to be the coolest thing so far from what I have read
at casters realm.
What other classes get some melee abilities, get to solo, and have
portals, botth self and group. And are called "Probably the
most powerful class in EQ?"
later

|
Thad (9/14/00)
John read about Rogues....they are so you.
-Sneak and hide
-Pick pocket the monsters
-Backstab for massive damage, can even double backstab at high levels.
-wield a dagger in both hands
-rogues get a chance, at high level, of outright killing a mob they
hit
|
|
Thad (9/14/00)
Druids are great, but they are pretty common...if that matters
to you. Also don't beleive for a second they melee that well, sure
up to lv30 they can melee, but after that they mostly nuke and heal.
Jamie Paladins are not that defensive, thier weapons do some good
damage, not as much as warriors.
Jamie, Mike and I can still both solo, hybrids(shadow knights,
Rangers, paladin) all solo better then warriors cause of thier spells.
But Jerod played a Barbarian warrior and soloed up to around lv30.

Khali (9/14/00)
Where's the best place for EQ info? What site has the best overview
of the game in general and character classes specifically to give
us some more background on what you guys are talking about?
J, you said Paladin was slow until L9. L9?? Is levelling really
slow in EQ? You all got L30+ in AC, what is AC L30 equivalent to
in EQ?
I read reviews of EQ (pre AC release) that said leveling at higher
levels required groups. Is this still the case? Mutt, you said something
about a Druid being good solo, but does that mean that some classes
are just not viable solo?
Interesting point by J predicting we'll all play EQ someday....I
don't know.....I don't think I'd go so far as to predict exodus
to EQ, but I think our current AC group will have changed dramatically
by say next June.

Thad (9/14/00)
These are the main sites I check out and read:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/
http://eq.castersrealm.com/
but there are many many more.
Ok guys if you come to Cazic thule we can get you to lv10 in a
weekend. Level30 AC would be like level20ish in EQ, but in EQ it
gets exponentially hard to level, although I do know a guy who made
level 50 with his ogre warrior in like 5 days played.
Grouping and soloing and high levels: -all classes can solo up
to about lv15 and then if they have good equipment they can go farther.
the best solo classes are:
- Druid -jack of all trades, they can dish out spell damage,
with DDs and DOTs and heal them selves, and have damage shields
- Necros -can summon a skeleton pet to fight for them,
have strong damage over time spells(DOT), can fear a mob and make
it run away as the pet and damage over time spells kill it, have
spells to help them regen mana faster, have spells that suck life
from monsters and give it to them(can you tell necros are super
tuff solo)
- Mages -can summon awsome elemental pets to fight for
them,
have strong direct damage(DD) spells, and have damage shields
classes that solo pretty good
- Shadow Knights -melee almost as well as warriors, can
summon a WEAK skeleton pet to help them fight, can fear monsters
similiar to necros, have feign death spell, have lifetap spells,
and have DOT spells
- Paladin -melee almost as well as warriors, can heal themselves
- Rangers -melee as well as warriors(can't take the damage
as well but they dish it out as well if not better), can heal
themselves, have some DOT spells, and have some DD spells
- Shamans(actaully at high levels they solo very well)
-at lv34 can summon a wolf pet, can heal themselves, can root
the monsters(makes it so the monsters can't move for a bit), have
massive DOT spells, some decent DD spells, also have spells the
slow down and weaken the monsters
- Wizards -can root and nuke
- Enchanters -can charm mobs and make them kill other monsters
- Monks -dish out lots and lots of melee damage, can use
mend skill to help heal damage
- Bards -they can kite with songs(run in front of monsters
and hit them with spells and keep on running), and they can charm
monsters like enchanters
classes that don't solo as well, but still can
- Clerics -have great DD spells vs undead, can heal themselves,
and also have root
- Rogue -hard because your major damage dealing is backstab
and to to backstab you need to be behind a mob, also no great
wat to heal
- Warriors -dish out lots of melee damage but have no great
way to heal oneself
And lastly if you have fun playing AC great no need to rush over
to EQ, but if you want to try something new and fun then try EQ,
I know for me it filled the void left by AC very well and I won't
probably leave EQ til Horizons comes out(if is as good as they say
it will be)

Mutt (9/14/00)
Its a tough question but I would say for Mates, you would want
someone with some ability to Heal. I think a Barbarian Shamen and
Barbarian Warrior would rock.
Shamens can heal, buff, SOW, and everything a warrior would need
for augmentation yet the Shamens can still solo pretty well also.
Another good combo would be Paladin Shadowknight, they are EXACT
opposites :) Paladins has clerical type spells and SKs have Necro
spells. Would be
interesting.
Rogue / Warrior would be ok but noone to heal. Would be a lot of
downtime.
Rangers Solo well and are still melee. They can Heal, Buff, SOW
(level 39), Snare,
Root, TRACK, and a gambit of other things.
Druids rock solo for the same above reasons except no REAL melee.
Warriors take a LOT of DMG before going down, they can SOLO a LOT.
CLerics are very saught after but are not a solo class they are
a Help everyone class.
Mages can Solo well, Necros Also. But not Melee.
I would say Paladins, and Rangers would be the better of the SOLO
classes. As they both get healing at level 9.
|
|
Mutt (9/14/00)
At level 30 I kill 5 level below me stuff for soloing at average.
But in AC you can solo a level 126 monster at level 30 so thats
a totally different proportion. Its different in EQ. In EQ when
you start getting past the 20 mark, a Level 30 creature lets say
takes a FEW level 30's to kill it. Its very different when you get
into specifics between the two games. You can solo and you can solo
anytime. Heck most of the wizards can never get a group hahaha :)
They always have to solo!
|
|
Druss (9/14/00)
Keith plays with people all the time.
What he means is, can he solo for hours on end if he wants to,
or is it way too much of a hassle.
I know that Mutt and Gar both LOVED to play with groups and HATED
soloing. I
imagine thats half the fun of EQ for you guys.
Keith and I like to solo sometimes, or play with our mates only.
What do you think are the best 3 classes for soloing
How high, (15-20? 20-25? 35-40?) can these three classes solo?
What are the two best characters to play if a husband and wife
wanted to play as a group for most of their time? In other words,
which two solo the best, and work together best as a team? Druid
and Druid? Mage and Theif? Warrior and Theif?
thanks
Jamie C. Wakefield
Druss

|
Thad (9/14/00)
I understand that, I like to solo also and I still can as a lv33
Shadow
Knight.
The 3 best classes for soloing are Necros, Mages, Druids I know
level 52 Shadow knights that still solo, I know level 60 necromancers
that still solos, I know lv55 mages that still solo, I know level
50ish monks that still sort of solo, I know lv60 druids that still
solo.
As far as two people teams, which is what I mostly do. Most often
when I play EQ it is just Chanda and I, and we do awsome. Here is
my list of best two people teams:
Necro and Rogue -Necro has a pet to tank, can DOT, and can fear
the monsters. The rogue can baskstab the monster as it runs away
from the necro
Necro and Druid -Necro has pet to tank, can DOT, and can
fear the monsters. The druid can heal, nuke, damage shield the skeleton
pet, teleport the two around
Heck necro and any class partner well, cause basically it is the
necro soloing with someone else to help out. Pretty much the same
for Druids too.
My personal favorite is a Shaman and a melee(warrior, shadow,
ranger, paladin, monk, rogue) class(this is what chanda and I do),
cause the shaman is the king of buffs and debuffs, also the shaman
can heal and dish some nice damage. The melee guy is there to tank
and keep stuff off the Shaman. Also Shamans get the pet at lv34
so they can do more damage.
Cleric and Melee work very well also. Cleric can heal and
buff and stun the monsters while the melee beats it up.
Enchanter and any other class works good also.
Bard and a melee work pretty darn good.
The key to partners is to get two classes that have different strengths.
