I Win
June 9, 2000

Some people feel the need to break the game. This isn't a bad thing, its just a way of playing. No matter what game I play, I always have to play a warrior. It has been that way for years.
But I also like to try and 'solve' the game.
Most games have a series of checks and balences so that one class is never really thought to be far superior to any other. And AC really does do a good job of trying to balence the classes. I've posted on how this is accomplished in various other posts.

But, without trying to sound like a whiner, it is clear that there are two things that still need some tweaking.

Archery
Item Magic

If you do not have Item magic as ANY character, people shudder. They ask when you are getting it. They give you high praise for surviving so long without it.
Its pretty much a fact in this game. Item Magic is so good, it should be included in the basic skills like magic defense, run, and jumping.
And, if you put two warriors in a room, same level, the one that has the higher item magic spells is going to win.
And fizzling sucks. My wife is an item archer, and you should seeher growl when she fizzles. Wow does that bug her.
And wow is she longing for level sixes. But they are a long way off. She can BARELY cast level fives at level 37 without a ton of fizzles.
It's all about item magic, and its all about who has the BEST item magic. Item magic is just that good. Not a rant, not a complaint, not a brag. Just a statement I think can be backed up very well. We all know how good item is.
Archery.
I'm not going to rant about archery. I'm just going to say that Archery has a lot of benefits and now has THE BEST quest weapon.

When you think, what do I combine with my Item Magic?

Sword? Mace? Dagger? Axe? Bow?

The clear favorite is Bow.
I don't need to explain why, we all know that you will never look at Mace users and think - 'Those guys are just broken. I wish I had taken Mace.' Or look at Sword guys and think the same thing. Right now, Bow is really attractive.
We started a discussion on our Listserver about starting over on Solclaim and how you would look. Knowing everything you know now. How would you remake your character.

One of our bowman showed us his template and two things stood out to me.

100 Coordination
100 Focus

You always see archers that start off with 100 Coordination, but how many start off with 100 Focus?
I can't stress this enough.
Archers that start off with 25-50 Focus are going to be 'o.k.' Item archers, but the ones that start off with 100 in Focus are going to be summoning portals by level 20. Casting level 5 Buffs at level 20, Level sixes by level 30-35.
There is no template here. Just the fact that this is the solution. This is the answer to the question 'Yeah,. but how do I win?'
(Tongue fimly planted in cheek, take it easy guys, its just an opinion, just a thought for people to try)
You win by starting with an Archer who has Item and 100 Coord, 100 Focus.
You get all the cool item spells, cool quest weapons, and none of that 'Wow, do I suck' feeling.
I feel if someone asks 'Yeah, but whats the BEST class to play?' That this is prety much the answer.
I Win Template
Str 33 End 30
Coord 100 Quick 33
Focus 100 Self 33
specialize: Item Magic
trained: Bow, Mana Conversion, Healing, Melee Defense

I started a new archer like this. Yes, its quite unconventional, so sue me.

33 - 30 - 100 - 33 - 100 - 33

I specialized in Item just because I want level 6's as soon as possible. I want lifestone recall as soon as possible. I want level 2 buffs at first level. Spec is not worth the skill credit expenditure, but I don't need much else, so why not.

As for the other stats - well, they are all balenced. Why? Because you are always going to need more of everything. Period. You will always need more str to carry arrows, more Hit Points, more Quickness, and you always need more mana. Might as well get them all to 100 on the same day, why bother thinking about what you are going to need first most?

Spec. Item Magic
Trained Bow, Mana conversion, Healing, Melee Defense and no idea what else.

People always swear that Item Archers need life.

Why?

Seriously?

When was the last time you saw an Archer imperil something, run off and then come back and kill it? I never, ever see that. I see archers run up and start shooting. Thats what I see.
Life magic also means more comps to juggle, more burden, more annoyance. I want one little bag of comps for my recalls and my bow buff spells, thats all. Everything else i need is healing kits, mana stones, and jewelry.
So, I took healing over life magic.
Mana conversion because I keep hearing you need that at first level so it can build. Melee defense because, well, you HAVE to have melee defense unless you are a mage.
Good luck.
Have fun.
Win.
