The Source at the Crossroads
7/5/00

I need someone who knows how, to make up a voting page to vote on some issues.

Let me bring up those issues right now.

Is it time for the Source to have a new monarch?

I brought this up last week, and have been ruminating on this for quite some time.

Once again, the thoughts from others, of me being monarch touch my heart, and make me sad. For all of the Source is filled with good people. And I love to lead them. But, I am feeling the pull.

The pull of laziness. Of games. Of lack of responsibility.

I have often said, and stand by it, that the Source is about the people in it. We are all friends here, the list is at peace again like it has not been for months, and things are grand. We have a fine group, and we have a good time.

So why not let someone else lead for a while?

Why not someone else be monarch. We are still source. We are still the same group of people. We are still all on the same mail list.

And yet, many feel that a change of name would affect us. That people know the name of Druss. That changing monarchs would hurt our identity.

I do not believe this, but I would do nothing to hurt the Source.

So, We need to decide a few things.

And just to let people know where we are coming from, I need to ramble a little more.

First and Foremost, Mare and I are getting lazy.

We have been playing this game for quite some time now, and it was a lot of fun to start the alliance, run the council, keep lists of what people needed, and quest items, and running big event Saturday, and writing articles about our adventures. All of that was WONDERFUL.

But now, well, we are getting lazy.

And its not right for the Lord and Lady of the Source to get Lazy.

A good portion of this game is about the Alliances you make. Who you pledge to. What group you belong to.

Many times you hear the common lament "I never see my Patron, much less my monarch. I've never even met my monarch."

I don't WANT to be that kind of a monarch.

But, Mare and I are getting tired. And I know a LOT of other of the old guard are also getting tired. And thats not really a bad or a good thing. It just is a thing. Its a true thing. We've done a lot this game has to offer for being an alliance, we've put a lot of effort into this group, we've put a lot of coul into making sure its filled with good people with a good attitude.

Now, we pretty much just want to play the game. With the good friends that we have assembled already.

One solution to this is to not let anyone else in.

I know for sure that Miko does not want any more vassals. He certainly does not want any more low level, take me hunting kind of vassals. I don't either. Neither does Rach' Mann. Neither does Simone, or Mizu, or a lot of the Old Guard.

If I was very narrow minded, and only interested in myself, I would say "No one else joins the Source." Special cases like, "This is my husband, can he join" would be different. Or "This is my best friend in RL, can he join."

But in cases like "I have heard about you guys, and I know Jamie from his magic writing, and I need a patron" would be denied. Not from any sort of maliciousness, but because a lot of people just want to sign on, adventure with the many friends they already have, and then sign off.

It is a game after all.

And games should be fun.

And thats where I am right now. Mare and I just want to sign on, talk with ALL the people we already know, kill some bugs and log off.

Thats not quite what you need in a monarch.

A monarch should have a more active role.

Now, lets say I said "I will continue to keep Druss as Monarch, so you can all keep the name Druss, but I want none of the responsability. I might not log on for weeks at a time. I might not answer /m tells. I might just move over to darktide entirely."

Many will say, "Fine, because people know us under Druss. We keep our identity."

Now lets say we add ten members. Good people. They go through all the process of being approved by the council, and everything. And then, they want to know why they never see Druss. Did they agree to join a group with no monarch? Do they understand that I might not log on for weeks at a time? How do you explain that to them?

Thoughts?

here's mine.

No more new members.

Why this won't work. - Because thats only fair to all the people who already have vassals. I have a hundred vassals. No new members suits me fine. Suits Miko Fine. Suits Mizu fine. Etc.

It doesn't suit Boreal fine. Or all the people level 20 who think "I'd like to someday have 2 vassals. Show them my best hunting spots, unload some good stuff on my mules onto them. Get some Xp from them every time I sign on. Have them look up to me because I am a good patron. Come rescue them when they need me. That would be good."

What I suggest.

The Source splits into Two groups.

I remain Monarch of the Old Guard, and Someone else becomes monarch of the new guard.

The new guard consists of all those people who still like being on the council. Still want to add new members. Still are new and fresh and filled with wonder about this game.

Someone like Khali could lead them. :-)

He has the experience of being with us since the begining, but is just now getting some time to play again. He knows all about what the Source is, but hasn't been able to play, literally, for months.

Or someone like Boreal. Anyone with a good head on their shoulders.

The Old Guard Source would then have the same people it has always had. Friends to adventure with, all under one name, all on the same list, etc etc etc. Only certain parts of playing this game would not be needed any more.

We'd all still be part of the same mail list, still go on group adventures together, etc. Just the lower level people, and all those people who still want more vassals would all go under the new leader for that group.

Any time you wanted to join the old guard, you could.

But the old guard would be people who have been playing the game for a long time, and have become jaded in some areas. :-) Like old fogies.

What this does is split us up into more level based adventuring too.

Its not fair for Boreal to join the source and have, um, 5 people to adventure with. Maybe. Considering that most of the people who are the most vocal, and well known, are all level 50 now.

It would be a lot easier to have a lower level Source, under a different Monarch who did their big event Saturday, or knew who was on-line to adventure with because he or she was the monarch of half the Source.

Just a thought.

Things to vote on.

No idea.

maybe someone smart can read this long ramble and make up a page with various things that need to be addressed.

Hope some sense came out of this. It probably didn't, but thats whats on my mind right now.

I'm too lazy right now to do the job I feel I should be doing as monarch. We can either get a different monarch from within the source to take over, or we can split up into two groups.

Thoughts?
