Drunken Madman Portal
by Beryl (2/8/00)
As promised, Ping and I tried out the portal opened by the drunken madman at the Baishi tower south (thanks Farik) of Baishi. Here is the story.
Dusk was falling on Baishi as I bought spell components, healing kits and fletching supplies and waited for Ping to join me for an expedition into the Dires. I paid particular attention to the components for lifestone recall since neither of us knew if there would be a return portal that would be easy to reach. Both of us knew not to trust any of the local information about the portal.
Ping arrived and we set out for the tower. Ping had a close call with a shadow wielding a bow that he mistoke for Beryl. Little did I know that that encounter was indeed foreshadowing for later in the evening.

We offered the drunk sake purchased from the pub in Baishi and he opened a portal to the coordinates of 21.5s 74.6w, Direlands. Ping and I take a ride and find ourselves inside a fort that is completely walled in. There is no way out and Ping could not jump the walls, even with jewelry of Jump III. We can see some of the unfriendly Direlands citizens on the other side of the walls, level 54 drudges, etc. There are no ladders to climb up the walls. There are 2 portals within the walls to the following locations:

Ridge Tower 53s 61.1w
outside Accursed Halls 24 s 57.8w

We choose the ridge tower portal. This portal brings us into another fort without a door, but this time there are ladders onto the walls, and one could leap into the wilds of the Dires. However, there are high level shadows circling the fort. At first I notice one leutenant and decide to take a few shots from atop the wall. This nearly cost me my life as he blasts me for 80 damage after I put about 40 into him. I retreat to the other side of the fort to heal and notice that a level 126 shadow has arrived. He casts level V coordination and defensiveless types spells on us through the walls as we deicde what to do next. Again there are 2 portals to choose from here. One leads back to the other fort and the other leads into the Accursed Halls. Neither of us are going PK at the moment but we decide to do some sightseeing and check out the alter for ourselves.
The Halls are not very challenging. We fell a couple of Bandy Captains and discover the Alter within 5 minutes. Bored with the Halls we both recall to the Baishi lifestone and the peace of the eastern half of Dereth.
Things take a turn for the worse at the lifestone. We decide to head east to Lin across country and hunt Golems in the Rocky Crypt. As Ping does earlier, I mistake, from sight of the lifestone, some Shadows for other players. With one shot I am down. Ping diverts the attention of the leutenant as I retrieve my Superior Helm which I always lose in death now. The remaining two shadows take notice and I make a dash for it taking a few arrows in the process.
I die once more on the way to the crypt. Once again from undetected shadows in a steep valley. Once in the Crypt, my 10% vitiae quickly dimishes with Ping's help. Ping is a desrtuctive force felling granite after granite. We meet up with a kind Mage named Trifer who provides Beryl with all level III buffs and healing so that I can succeed in taking down a couple of Granites with Ping. Trifer also imperils for us.
So, what we have learned is that there is a safe way to reach the Accursed Halls without walking unprotected through the Dires. One could easily take a low level character from Mayoi through A Ruin to Baishi and then take the portals through to the Halls.
Khal: Be sure to add Trifer (no allegiance, level 17 mage) as a new friend of the Source.
