Hunting Hoarys XIV

| Yesterday I sign on in the early
evening, and see myself uncomfortably close to a Hoary Mattekar. So
close that I can see him on my radar. (Which brings up something funny,
but I'll talk about that later...) So I immediately put some distance
between us, and he doesn't follow. Cool. He must not have heard me.

| Now, I've tried to solo these
great beasts many times, with no success. I've gotten pretty close
but either died at a bad time (yeah, like there's really a good time
to die?) or ran out of mana, tried to recuperate, but he's healing
all the time, etc.. But the end of the event is near, and with it,
many things like are going to change. Hoary's are rumored to be leaving.
Will they ever come back? Who knows? |

| So, I decide I'll give it one
more shot. I have about a 5% vitae from the previous night, so I buff
myself with Armor, Piercing Protection, War Magic Mastery, etc. I
turn to hit him with a Vulnerability spell, and see him take off running.
Wha---?!? He's not running at me, he's after someone else. A few seconds
later, he runs back to his little spot, but now he's at about 60%
health. |

| So I decide to kill the beast,
and let loose a flurry of Flame Bolts. He charges. I keep firing.
He's now in my face, and sticks me in the ribs. I keep firing. He
rears his head for the death blow, I keep firing. He thrusts, then
dies. |

| I check to see who received the
kill, and it says Hakeem. I loot the corpse, just as Bowen Dragonheart
runs up. I think, "Should I give the hide to Bowen, as he started
the kill?" Then I remember that, in the previous week, when I was
on the hill with two other people seeking hides, Bowen ran up, obviously
looking to kill Hoary's as well. I ask "Are we taking turns?" He replies
"No, the person who gets the kill gets the hide." And he proceeds
to start getting the kills and hides. So did I feel bad about keeping
the hide from a kill that was mine, but that he had done most of the
work on? Not at all. |
