Item Buffs For Defense

The Silent Spearman
"Radically Anti"

This is an article to illustrate the drastic effect that Item buffs
can have on your ability to tank high-level monsters.

We're going to follow TSS on his journey to kill a Banderling
Thrasher. This particular Thrasher has a Frost Club which its very hard for
Cold damage, a damage type that most metal armors are susceptible to.

TSS find the spawn. His current defense levels?

130 AL on his upper body from his Amuli Shadow Coat. All elemental
protections are Average (100%) except for lightning, which is Below Average
(66%). That's no problem because the damage he is expecting is cold damage.

130 AL on his lower body from his Amuli Shadow Leggings. All
elemental protections are Average (100%) except for lightning, which is
Below Average (66%). That's no problem because the damage he is expecting
is cold damage.

230 AL on his head due to his Olthoi Helm. The Olthoi Helm is Below
Average against Cold (66%), so the effective AL of the helm vs. cold is
approximately 153.

136 AL to his entire front hemisphere due to his Gold Tower Shield.
The shield is Below Average against Cold (66%) though, so the effective AL
vs. Cold is only 91.

Total AL on hits to his head is 244.
Total AL on hits to his upper body is 221.
Total AL on hits to his lower body is 221.

In this unbuffed state, the Banderling Thrasher would kick TSS'
sorry ass. But, we're not buffed yet :)

TSS casts Impenetrability V on his Coat and Leggings. Now, instead
of being a paltry 130 AL, they are all AL 285. Quite an increase in
effectiveness.

TSS casts Impenetrability V on his shield. It is now AL 293, but
the Below Average vs. Cold still hurts, bringing it to an effective AL of
206.

Total AL vs. Cold to the head: 359
Total AL vs. Cold to the upper body: 491
Total AL vs. Cold to the lower body: 491

Not bad, but we're not done yet :)

TSS casts Frost Bane V on his Coat and Leggings, bringing both up to
Unparalleled vs. Cold (200%). They are now 570 AL vs. Cold.

TSS casts Frost Bane V on his Gold Tower Shield, bring it up to
Excellent vs. Cold (166%). It is now 499 AL vs. Cold.

TSS puts on his Armor IV Bracelet, giving him another 100 AL to all
hit locations.

AL vs. Cold to the head: 752
AL vs. Cold to the upper body: 1169
AL vs. Cold to the lower body: 1169

Wow, what a tank! What, we're not done?

TSS puts on his Cold Protection IV Shirt (reduces damage from cold
by 43%)
TSS casts Impenetrability V on his Cold Protection IV Shirt, giving
it an AL of 155, but the shirt is Poor vs. Cold (33%), giving it a worthless
AL of 50.
TSS casts Frost Bane V on his Cold Protection IV Shirt, giving it
Excellent vs. Cold (166%), raising the AL vs. cold to 258 or so.

AL vs. Cold to the head: 752
AL vs. Cold to the upper body: 1417
AL vs. Cold to the lower body: 1169

All damage from cold is reduced by 43%.

TSS attacks the Thrasher.

He takes 0 damage a hit.
Banderling Enforcer casts Imperil VI on TSS. Imperil VI? That most
deadly of spells?

TSS now takes 1 damage a hit, 2 on a crit.
TSS has 190 HP and can heal for 75-100 in one shot. He is fighting
one of the game's hardest hitting monsters with Imperil VI on him!

Nope. 1 or 2 damage. Maybe 5 if he crits the head.

Banderling Enforcer casts Cold Vulnerability V on TSS.

TSS has been vulned and Imperil'd! What will he do!??!

TSS now takes 2 damage a hit, 3 or 4 on a crit.

TSS will laugh and collect his loot, that is what.

Lessons you Item guys should learn from this:

1. You can increase your Armor Level by 600% with proper use of
item spells.
2. Imperil VI isn't that damn bad if you are fully buffed.
3. The true tank tools are the Banes. Don't underestimate them.
